[...] With Frankie, we're on our third week of "real" raw (we were on pet store pre-mixed raw before that - and kibble before that). We just added turkey in this week and it seems to be doing well for her. To give you a little bit of background, Frankie is a ten year old Miniature Pinscher/Terrier mix. She has had multiple health problems (chronic pancreatitis, nasty teeth) in the past. With her pancreatitis, she would have the hardest time pooping (the vet later told me that this was because she didn't really have much of anything in her intestines!) and she would vomit. She lost a lot of weight because her pancreas wasn't producing enough enzymes - and even though she was eating a ridiculous amount of food everyday... she was literally starving to death! So... as you can imagine, her stomach was very sensitive. Just before her last dental cleaning, I switched her over from kibble to pet store raw. After her dental cleaning, I switched her from pet store raw to chicken. She has been doing MUCH better and she gets way more excited when I ask her if she wants food - and oh, "food" is her favorite word. Her coat is softer and shinier, her stools are firmer and compact, she has more energy, and her teeth haven't gotten nasty yet (and hopefully never will again). Sorry.. I think I've started to ramble. Back to what I was originally going to say: we're eating turkey necks for one meal and chicken the next. She's handling turkey necks well so... I hope this helps you get ideas? Go with turkey and then to pork or fish! Use this as a guideline: Getting Started (quick start) | Prey Model Raw [...]

You can get a 10 lbs bag of chicken leg quarters at Walmart for about 60 cents/lb! And with free hauls you can get off craigslist asking people who are cleaning our their freezers to give you any of their old/freezer burned meat (the only thing that affects is the taste, which our dogs don't care about), then it usually averages out to about $0.74/lb for my dogs. To feed Peyton alone it costs me between $45 - $50/month and she gets about 2 lbs of food per day. You don't need to buy all organic. You don't need to buy in super bulk. You don't need to get tons of exotic animals in there. Yes, it's amazing if you can afford to do all of those things, but it is definitely not a mandatory part of feeding a well-balanced, basic prey model raw diet. I would even say that if you can only afford to feed raw chicken, egg, and liver to your dog, it will be leaps and bounds better than kibble (no offense to kibble feeders). Premade raw is expensive and basically uncooked kibble. Still better than kibble because it is uncooked, but still not as great as a prey model raw food diet with real whole animals parts rather than ground up mush. Here are some websites to help you out: Skylar, Zack, and Abby on the WEB Getting Started (quick start) | Prey Model Raw [...]
